Pitch: Music Video Proposal Feedback

Overall our feedback was positive with minimal criticisms:

Positives: The simplicity of our initial idea
                The chosen public locations
                Projection idea (in the studio)

                             Clear visual demographics
                            Appealing style
                             Transitioning shots
                            Male actor (narrative elements)
                            Range of techniques
                            Detailed case studies
                            Subverted male gaze

Negatives: Our teacher, Vanessa suggested that we don't have double exposure effect as it's an ambitious idea considering our limited time frame to complete the music video project- as well as it being a  difficult and long process to complete. Therefore, we reconsider and stick to the idea of projection art for the studio shoot as it is much more straight-forward.

Progression Post: Pitch

Our chosen media for the idea proposal is Emaze as it is straight forward and effecient as well as it being cloud-based which is convenient for adding information at a later date. Lauryn and I have started to create our music video proposal presentation. We chose to display our presentation on Emaze.

Slides we have left to complete is our music video inspirations - previous case studies, our actors in our video, target audiences, examples of potential shots and channel for broadcasts

Progression Post: Lyric Breakdown & Treatment

Lauryn and I have decided to work as a pair and have chosen to base our project on the song 'Bet You Wish' By Raye, this was one of Lauryn's potential songs and therefore we have a prospective idea as the foundation of the video. The song itself also correlates with a genre and theme I wish to conform to and therefore we shall combine our ideas to create the visuals to the soundtrack that assimilates all codes and conventions that the genre requires, as well as our own original, authentic ideas.

We have already discussed possible shots for the video and therefore have managed to complete a lyric annotation in an attempt to envision and have a more understanding of the lyrics and emotions it is intended to provoke. We also decided that narrative elements will be effective as it adds more depth to the overall theme portrayed as the final product. After repetitively listening to the soundtrack we though of three suitable locations that will suit the urban ambience of the song, most of which being public locations; such as Hackney/Shoreditch (Barbican estate), Leake Street, Baker Street and the college studio. These ideas are not 100% conclusive as we are still open to new ideas, however we seem to have the bulk of the foundation of the song arranged.

Pre-production: Treatment

Music Video - Treatment:
Raye ‘Bet You Wish’

  • The song Lauryn and I have chosen for our music video is ‘Bet You Wish’  by Raye.

  • This will be mainly Performanced based but will include narrative elements also. The narrative element to the video will be a male - love interest who is angry towards our performer. This links to the lyrics as the song states that her lover did not treat her with respect.
  • The performance side will be lip synched by Shana April
  • The locations we have chosen to have our music video set at is Shoreditch E1, Leake Street and our college studio. We chose to have our video performed at Shoreditch and Leake Street as there are lot of colourful street art located her and it's easy to get to. We chose to have our video also set in our college studio so we are able to add in effects - projections and double exposure effects.

  • The professional music video which inspire some of my ideas is Nicki Minaj ‘Pills and Potions’, Rihanna ‘We Found Love’ and Tove Lo ‘Habits (Stay High)’.
  • There are minimal ethical considerations due to the age of our main performer, the genre as well as the overall theme of our video. However, our large use of graffiti footage throughout could suggest our product to be promoting vandalism which is considered a criminal offense.
  • Length of the track is 3minutes 20 seconds but the video will be 3minutes 40 seconds, as we will feature in the first 20 seconds of our video audio of the male character sending a voice note to ‘Raye’ -  Shana.
  • The audience in this video will be mainly young people as this genre is Pop/R&B - which is a genre that already targets the younger generation. Therefore it will be advertised on apps whose targeted consumers are youngsters such as snapchat and twitter.

There are minimal ethical considerations due to the age of our main performer, the genre as well as the overall theme of our video. However, our large use of graffiti footage throughout could suggest our product to be promoting vandalism-criminal offense.
  • The channels of broadcast will be Youtube - popular music channel which enables people to stream and share also benefiting us. Another idea is to promote the song on social media such as snapchat as it is more consumed by young people and this will therefore spread it by word of mouse.

Editing Task Evaluation

The final outcome of the video is in my opinion decent considering the limited time we had to film and edit, however during this short time we did come across complications. A weakness of ours was matching the timing of the soundtrack to the video, however we attempted to do it as close as it could possibly be. Another weakness i have observed is the controlling of light as over-exposure of light is displayed in the football pitch scene; the natural lighting appeared to be a bit over-powering, this could of been controlled using the creative setting where it automatically adjusts to the current status. However, a lot of positive aspects were analysed as well, such as the performers dedication and enthusiasm is visible which enables the audience to have more of an emotional response. The tripod also enabled there to be more stability (which was lacking in my first group lip-sync task), this then added a sense of professionalism. There was a range of proximity's and composition used also as it intends to add more depth and charisma to the video. As for editing, as we are still not that familiar to the software, we struggled for the first lesson, however by the second lesson we developed more of an understanding and attempted to use more advanced techniques such as the fade of sound. The text inserted also correlated to the codes and conventions of the love genre.
Overall there is room for improvement but my group members and I are content and satisfied with the final outcome of the video.

Editing Task Progression

Our chosen song for the task is Love Galore originally performed by SZA, however for our video Lauryn volunteered to perform in front of the camera. The song itself conforms to the typical common theme of love songs, however the sombre, steady beat will enable the editing to be at a slower pace which is beginner friendly. The three chosen locations where the college in the college field; the basketball court, the football pitch and the bench (each location having a range of shot types). The footage was filmed using a Canon DSLR as well as using a tripod for stability. After we had shot the 1 minute of footage in each location, we got a head start in the editing suite and started the process using the Premiere Pro software which we will continue to edit next lesson as we were short for
time in todays lesson.

Music Video Mood Board

I created an additional mood board based on inspirations for my video- all music videos mentioned are targeted towards the similar potential target audience which therefore follow certain codes and conventions to suit to them. I plan to use, challenge and subvert these elements, in order to create a unique video yet still conforms to the urban youth.

Music Video Task Evaluation

Planning was a strong aspect of our group, we all decided on the chosen lip-synced part as a group decision as well as the locations for the video, therefore teamwork and planning was not an issue as everyone contributed and was involved. As the music video task appeared to be spontaneous there was no room for planning in-depth such as a narrative or a structured pattern as it would be preferred as it is a common trend in music videos. Filming was enjoyable as it was straight forward, however editing and putting the footage together to form one constant piece was a challenge. Placing the song over the video to match also seemed to be a weakness, therefore to avoid this in the future thought would be put in to keeping the voice consistent such as possibly calculating the timing and playing it aloud from another device. A major challenge for the music video project would be using the timing effectively to edit between scenes on beat and matching the tempo of the song. To improve for the main project an effective well planned use of camera and mise-en scene would be incorporated in order to contribute to the overall aura of the song and how I wish to perceive it to viewers as those factors are crucial.

On the whole, all of our ideas could be incorporated and it could be produced at a higher standard with a sense of professionalism therefore the task was not done to the standard I expected it, however these obstacles will be taken on board and dealt with when approaching the main music video task.
